What is the International Computing Olympiad (ICO)?

The International Computing Olympiad (ICO) is an annual global competition designed to inspire and challenge young minds in the fields of technology, coding, and problem-solving. The Olympiad brings together students from various age groups to compete in innovative challenges that address real-world issues through creativity, computational thinking, and cutting-edge technology.

The effects of climate change are more pronounced than ever. Bring your creativity and coding skills together to tackle this global challenge in this year’s ICO Climate Action Challenges. Make an impact, one solution at a time.

This year’s theme is built on the foundation of 3A’s: Awareness, Analysis, and Action. It encourages participants to explore climate challenges, use data-driven insights, and develop impactful solutions to create a greener, more sustainable future.

Students can showcase their skills and creativity by competing in one of these exciting tracks, each tailored to different age groups and skill levels:

Climate Action Ambassador
Ages: 6-11 years

Use Scratch to create an engaging animation or game that raises awareness about climate change and its effects. Inspire people to take small, meaningful actions to protect our planet.

Climate Action Contributor
Ages: 11-14 years

Develop an application that calculates the climate impact of daily choices an individual makes. Based on these calculations, suggest alternative actions to help reduce their carbon footprint. Use Python or HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build your application and empower users to make more sustainable decisions.

Climate Data Analyst
Ages: 14-19 years

Analyze data from trusted sources to create a detailed report on how climate change affects a specific natural resource or aspect of biodiversity. Present insights that deepen our understanding of the impact and drive positive change.

AI for Climate Action
Ages: Open to all

Create an AI-based solution to address a specific climate challenge, such as predicting environmental changes, optimizing resource usage, or raising awareness through innovative AI applications. Demonstrate how your AI model or application can contribute to saving the climate or tackling related issues effectively. Inspire others with your innovative approach to climate action.
